The Ceylon College of Surgeons was set up 47 years ago in 1971 succeeding the Association of Surgeons of Ceylon. At this time, the possible commencement of postgraduate surgical education and training in Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then known) was a contentious issue. Late Dr P R Anthonis was elected as the Founder President of the newly set up College and Dr Ananda D Soysa was elected as the Founder Secretary. When the period of the Association of Surgeons too is taken into account, the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka (CSSL) is 56 years old now

The CSSL has evolved gradually and into an active academic hub over past several years. With the setting up of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo in 1980, formal postgraduate surgical education and training commenced in Sri Lanka, and the College members had to play a pivotal role in surgical training and evaluation. Formal relations were maintained with the UK Royal Colleges during this period. The mace of the CSSL College was presented by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1981. The mace symbolizes the close relationship between the two Colleges in Sri Lanka and Edinburgh. It was presented to Dr Ananda Soysa, the then President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka by Professor John Gillingham, the then President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This old mace is a treasured item of the college office today.

The late Mrs Nora Bartholomeusz (the widow of the pioneer Sri Lankan surgeon, the Dr Noel Bartholomeusz) decided to bequeath their residence in a prime residential area in Colombo for the CSSL. The College Office shifted to its own new location - the Bartholomeusz Residence in Colombo in 2004. The then Council decided to name its new HQ as the “Noel and Nora Bartholomeusz Foundation”. Subsequently a new auditorium was commissioned and its work was completed with numerous fund raising events.
